COSMIC Medical Briefings on COVID-19

Latest Innovations on COVID-19 Transmission and Treatments

COSMIC Symposiums were a monthly meeting where we reviewed the progress of all of our projects. We heard from front-line clinicians and learned about the progress COSMIC was making in the fight against COVID. You are welcome to watch recordings of past monthly symposiums by checking out our Facebook page or Youtube Channel. You can also read a summary of monthly symposiums below.

The Monthly COSMIC Symposiums have concluded. Thank you for joining us.

June 2021 Design Review: Yajur Sondhi, founder of OSMS-BC.

Since they launched in March 2020, Open Source Medical Supplies (OSMS) has brought together a global network of over 70,000 makers, fabricators, community organizers, and medical professionals working to meet the unprecedented medical supply challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

OSMS-BC is a strong team of engineers, designers, business professionals, and students that came together to provide support to various stakeholders in their effort to tackle COVID-19. We aim to provide a valuable contribution in mitigating the pandemic and effectuating a province where access to healthcare supplies and accurate health information is ubiquitous and dependable.

May 2021 Design Review: Lori Most, Backpack EMR.

Binary Bridge is a Public Benefit company with the specific mission to improve access to healthcare and increase the quality of care in underserved locations. Lori’s desire to bring high-tech solutions to amazing medical teams working in low-income countries drove her to start Binary Bridge. After nearly 20 years in the technology industry, Lori is applying her knowledge of software design and development to BackpackEMR, a portable patient-tracking system for mobile clinics reaching those without access to healthcare facilities in rural, low-income countries.

Project Updates from the oxygen concentrator, gravity ventilator, and bubble helmet teams.

April 2021 Design Review: Victoria Jaqua, Medical Team Co-Lead of OSMS and Board Member of Public Invention.

Victoria Jaqua is a registered radiology technologist specializing in cardiac catheterization. When not working her clinical job, she is the Medical Team Co-Lead for Open Source Medical Supplies (OSMS), where she supports the maker-medical connection, especially for traditionally under-served populations.

Project Updates from the oxygen concentrator, gravity ventilator, and bubble helmet teams.

March 2021 Design Review: Marc Jones, a U.S. attorney who has worked on open-source issues throughout his career.

Project Updates from the oxygen concentrator, gravity ventilator, and bubble helmet teams.

February 2021 Design Review: Dr. Matt Carney, Co-Founder of Open Standard Industries.

The Open Standard Industries is a social impact company that has designed and makes a reusable, elastomeric air-purifying face mask with bi-directional source-control filtering (no check-valve) and a tight seal.

Project Updates from the oxygen concentrator, gravity ventilator, and bubble helmet teams. The bubble helmet team recently submitted a Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute team grant application.

January 2021 Design Review: Mr. Robert Read, Co-Founder and Head Coach of Public Invention.

Among many other professional accomplishments, Mr. Read was an Obama Presidential Innovation Fellow and coach for the Analysis of Open-Source Ventilators project. The Mission of Public Invention is to "Invent in the public, for the public."

As of December 30th, we successfully reached our $6,000 fundraising goal to pay for the material and manufacturing of 60 bubble helmets for our first clinical trial. We will thank and hear from our donors at this meeting.

December 2020 Design Review: Co-Leads from SmithVent, Dr. Susannah Howe and Ms. Astrid Harradan.

Agenda items for the upcoming Dec 17th meeting include:

  • COSMIC Strategic Update: Update about the strategic direction of COSMIC and update about the kind of volunteers and donations that COSMIC needs.

  • Project updates from the oxygen concentrator, gravity ventilator and bubble helmet teams.

  • Presentation from co-leads of SmithVent. The SmithVent team won the CoVent-19 challenge to design an easily manufacturable ventilator for use during the coronavirus pandemic.

November 2020 Design Review: Martin Shetty from RespiraWorks

In November, we are joined by Martin Shetty from RespiraWorks (https://respira.works/). RespiraWorks is a non-profit organization with over 200 contributors worldwide working to rapidly design low-cost and open-source ventilators, and other medical equipment for communities underserved by the global supply chain.

October 2020 Design Review: Mike Paddock, the chief engineer of Engineers without Borders USA

In October, we're joined by Mike Paddock, the chief engineer of Engineers without Borders USA (Linkedin profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-p...). Having a civil engineering background, he's currently on a sabbatical leave to advise the United Nations Development Program, specifically on PPE production for COVID-19 response. This month's discussion would be relevant for what's currently needed around the world as COVID-19 ravages on.

September 2020 Design Review: Adi Oltean and Ben Coombs.

In September, we were joined by Adi Oltean and Ben Coombs to discuss oxygen concentrators. There are multinational companies and even nations joining in the race of ventilator contributions to the developing world as COVID-19 has spared practically no one. That said, ventilators and CPAP machines are of little use if there are not enough oxygen tanks, especially if the production capacity cannot keep up with patient volumes, and/or supply chain and transportation infrastructure problems present in some countries with violent conflict prior to the pandemic.
