COSMIC - Creating Abundant Access to Medical Equipment

Starting in January 2020, Coronavirus rapidly became a global challenge and global healthcare crisis. Many organizations and people turned this challenge into an opportunity by volunteering to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime global response.

The desire to help and be part of the solution to COVID-19 motivated us to create the Collective Open-Source Medical Innovations for COVID-19 (COSMIC) not-for-profit organization in Vancouver, Canada. Our mission at COSMIC is to create abundant access to medical equipment through open-source design solutions.

To learn more about COSMIC, check out the 2020 COSMIC Annual Report, People, Organization, Collaborators, Donors, Project Overview, and Media.

All of our open-source project designs are now available on GitHub.

Our Plan

  • Create a community of BC-based problem solvers

  • Leverage the existing global crowdsourcing effort

  • Select and modify designs that will meet BC health system requirements and local production capabilities

  • Build and test low-cost respiratory support equipment.

  • Offer the equipment for use

  • Share what we design and learn with the world

Closing down COSMIC:

As of January 2022, we have decided to close down COSMIC. We have decided to do so because it has been two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the world has had time to adjust to the new reality of COVID-19. Compared to the start of COVID-19, the world is not facing the same dire shortage of medical equipment that we originally faced, and there isn’t the same urgency and interest from volunteers to work on developing respiratory support equipment for COVID-19 patients.

The Bubble Helmet project continues to pursue ongoing regulatory and commercialization status through a spinoff venture: CLARIVENT MEDICAL. Please visit this sister site and continue your support of this important venture.

About Us

We are a group of volunteers committed to fighting against COVID-19.

We are a team of over 150 students, engineers, doctors, makers, and designers from Vancouver and the global community.

Disclaimers
*Ventilators: We are currently developing a mechanical bag-valve-mask ventilator with controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) and assist control (AC). We recognize that our “ventilator” will not be nearly as sophisticated and safe as the ventilators that are routinely used in hospitals in British Columbia.

We agree with the statement that “care must be exercised as the solutions needed are very complex and have dire consequences if poorly designed or implemented.” (ref: Hawes et al, Recommendations for the Strategic Response to Global Ventilator Shortage)
